A Tiny Truth (#2) for Election Day
Here's the one thing to keep in mind as the results come in.
There are no political parties inside a natural disaster zone: the hippie commune will organize daily meetings and food distribution. Guys with chainsaws, Trump t-shirts, and American flag shorts will go house to house clearing peoples’ driveways. Teenagers will get tired of hauling water from the river and figure out how to build an aqueduct. Hunters will drop off deer meat as their freezers thaw. Doctors will arrange for medical checks. And landscapers will pull-out their heavy equipment, gather what gas they can, and start clearing the roads.
Before true dark falls, people of all political persuasions will stand in the street sharing whatever beer, wine, or hard cider can be scrounged from their powerless fridges. They’ll talk about how to make sure everyone is safe, how to get the damaged roofs tarped, how to build a temporary bridge at the end of the road….
All this (and more) happened on the east side of Asheville in the past month.
If you live in the U.S. and have voted, you’ve already done everything you can for the national part of this election. Now focus on the local: wave to a neighbor or say hello over the fence. Don’t wait until you're trying to figure out who has a stash of clean water, or who knows how to check if the downed power lines are still live, to make a connection.
xx Maia
