Life in Edinburgh has been exactly the opposite of what I thought it would be!
The lower half of the walls of the living room (lounge or sitting room, here in Edinburgh) have been torn out for “damp proofing.” From what I can tell, “damp proofing” is the modern antidote to the nineteenth century habit of building stone foundations directly on the damp Scottish soil.
As the plaster came down, a hundred and fifty years of dust thick…
