Unkempt Community? Witch Camp Reunion? Facebook sans Zuck?
Whatever you want to call it, let's get our chat on! Substack kindly provides a private space for us to converse and connect...and I'm thinking we should be using it.
Yup, I’ve dabbled with it before so this isn’t 100% new but I had a huge DUH! moment this weekend and realized I wasn’t using it right. (Are you sensing a theme in my latest missives?)
So today I’m announcing a brand new addition to Unkempt: the Unkempt community chat.
What’s different than the previous dabbling?
You, that’s right you, can start a conversation… that is, if you’re a paid subscriber. Somehow I hadn’t picked up on this aspect before, an aspect that makes this a true vehicle for creating community.
**Additionally, I learned that chat will NOT appear in your inbox as an email. I was concerned about that; we are all too overwhelmed to deal with a zillion zany emails.**
This space is exclusively for my subscribers — kind of like a group chat or live hangout. I’ll occasionally post short prompts, thoughts, and updates that come my way, and you can jump into the discussion….and the creation of new coversations. And we’re getting this going simultaneously with the new seasonal prompts so we should have plenty to chew on together.
The chat features are fabulous: you can add photos and even @mention other subscribers. Simply pull up a list of other subscribers in a chat by using the “@” key followed by their name. The person must be subscribed to the publication to be @mentioned and they will receive a notification each time they are @mentioned.
To join our chat, you’ll want to download the Substack app, now available for both iOS and Android. Chats are sent via the app, not email, so turn on push notifications so you don’t miss conversation as it happens. You can also see the chat on your desktop (“Chat” is now in the menu) but you won’t be notified of new conversations without the app.
Can’t wait to chat with you!
xx Maia
How to get started
Download the app by clicking this link or the button below. Substack Chat is now available on both iOS and Android.
Open the app and tap the Chat icon. It looks like two bubbles in the bottom bar, and you’ll see a row for my chat inside.
That’s it! Jump into my thread to say hi, and if you have any issues, check out Substack’s FAQ.
